Funny man Jon Stewart debuts new film Rosewater

November 14, 2014

Rosewater was written by the comedic genius Jon Stewart. It’s a detailed account of the kidnapping of Maziar Bahari after the 2009 Iranian Elections based on the New York Times best-selling memoir “Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival,” written by the BBC journalist Maziar Bahari. The movie covers the time he spent detained in the Evin Prison.  Maziar is a native of Tehran he was in Iran doing a story for Newsweek on the election. While there he interviewed the locals on the street to get an honest opinion of the populous.  From all indications the challenger Mir-Hossein Mousavi had the hearts and minds of the people. After the votes were tallied the incumbent Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won in a landslide of over sixty percent. This caused riots and protest in the streets.

The local authorities had intercepted an interview Maziar had participated in with The Daily Show’s Jason Jones. Jones refers to himself as a spy when he ask a question. That interview for a comedy news show was used to portray the reporter as a spy. The movie touches on the relationship between Maziar and his father who was also imprisoned in Evin for being a Communist in the fifties.  It gets it’s name because he was forced to wear a blindfold for most of his stay and the only recurring memory was a guard sent to break him that smelled like Rosewater. The movie shows the effort it takes for Maziar to keep not only his composure but his mind as well. It flows very well and even has several funny situations that pull the viewer even deeper into the story line. Jon Stewart has made a movie that gives a small glimpse of the atrocities around the world. And reminds us that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.
