Godspell is a fun, exciting and colorful hit musical by Stephen Shwartz, the Grammy and Academy Award®-winning composer of Wicked that tells the parables from the Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of Luke with a modern musical twist. The Lexus Broadway presentation playing at the Winspear Opera House is not just another musical based on the stories in the Bible. It’s an upbeat musical that will keep a smile on your face throughout the duration of the program and gets you involved (just ask some of the audience members that were called on stage to participate in charades, Pictionary and to act as Lazarus). Before you know it you are bobbing your head to the tunes of the actors with undeniable voices who sing in perfect harmony. The musical reminds us to have forgiveness, not to cast stones and so many of the things that we often forget to do. The cast each sing a solo based on their “lesson” from the parable.
What I personally like about the musical are the different genres of music, from folk to disco, to rapping and opera. Something for anyone’s personal musical taste. The writers also added a special touch by incorporating many Dallas sites into the musical such as the historical restaurant Campisi’s.Godspell is a great experience and definitely one that you should each experience as well.
Grab your friends, family, youth team, church and grab a few tickets! The show runs until March 2nd at the Winspear Opera House.
